Engine Bay Update

Theres a meet on monday so I thought I'd finally get the engine bay detailing in gear.

Stage 1 Tuning Complete!

Stage 1 Tuning is finally complete.

Next stage will include changing the 4EFE ecu for a 5EFE ecu to gain more ignition timing.

ITBS will now be worked on...

The AFRs are now much better than they were before, I can't say Im completely happy with the performance but hopefully the itbs will be the difference maker because all I can see at the moment is the intake being the biggest restriction.

In the meantime some Utada to keep the mood...

Tuning Stage Recommences Next Week!

After a few problems with initial tuning I found I needed an additional injector adaptor #2 for the Emanage Ultimate.

I also checked the jumper settings and they seem correct

So as long as my tuner can fit me in next week, the 5EFHE can finally get tuned to unleash its full potential.

Have already been for stage 1 tuning and we just need an extra injector adaptor #2 to be able to find tune the emanage ultimate for adding and trimming fuel.

The car has a new license to rev and accelerates great thanks to the lightened components and also packs some punch with the newly extracted volume.

Some more tuning then RR tuning is planned so watch this space.

The bodywork is also planned soon to complete the package for this EP with a purpose...

There was a small complication with the gearbox when the new lsd was fitted.

Being aftermarket it was a little slack due to one spacer being too thin.

A selection have been ordered and hopefully the box will be back with me by friday night.

I finally left the EP at my mechanics on monday evening and after I called earlier I got news that the engine is already successfully out and that I should be able to collect the gearbox by tommorow evening.

This means that I can drop off the gearbox to get the lsd fitted by someone else.

I received one wrong diff bearing so gotta send that back to Toyota. Its not gonna delay anything as my car isnt in my mechanics garage yet nor is the gearbox out for my other mechanic to fit the diff. I just gotta keep visiting my main mechanic and put pressure on him until he can fit me in .

5l of Silkolene Gear Oil has been ordered also.

Progress Update

I've decided to hold off the fitting of the brakes for a while to free up resources available for other choice parts that I either need to buy or pay for.

The brakes are however ready to fit...

The major news is that the main part I have been after for so long is finally completed and ready to send to me.

Another note is that Riko has sent me a pallet with all the 5EFHE engine parts he has helped me gather throughout the year, without his help I wouldnt be able to acquire anything really so big kudos to him.

So basically watch this space as there are some big changes coming and lots of nice updates.

All shall be revealed...

Those are the latest updates for parts actually on the car.

As for the differences they make, its a return to 4" jap style for me, albeit a lot louder (ordering exhaust bung) but definitely more flow when on wot. The Ultra Racing 4 Point Lower Arm Brace has been a revelation and certainly better clearance than the previous cusco 2 point brace. -1 deg Negative camber was also added taking advantage of the adjustable pillowball mounts on my Tanabe coilovers. I have had more before but the balance feels just right.

I have been busy sourcing choice parts for the next major stage of the EP N/A Tuning Saga. Costs are mounting and time is well... taking its time but its going to be immense and expensive hahahahaha ~_~!...

Have you ever heard the saying "Its never too late"???

Exactly! Although the project is nearing completion I wanted to further spread the story of what has unfolded within the last two years of ownership.

I usually keep a thread of progress on the best starlet site out there www.ukstarletclub.com and I have used various other methods to show progress such as photos, videos and interactive slideshows.

I have always wanted to have my own website or perhaps some way of tastefully showing what the project is all about and since the advent of blogging I thought I should give one a go as it seems a perfect way of sharing a slice of ones life portraying ones pride and joy as well as other happenings in ones life.

The other reason Im creating this blog is because the project car is not your average run-of-the-mill starlet, there is so much more meaning to what has been done with an emphasis on styling, suspension, braking, engine function and the overall driving experience. Money has been spent, tears have been shed, blood has been wiped off with an oil soaked rag... ok forget that last part but you get the picture.

Everthing will soon unfold so sit tight and hold on for the ride.

Without further adieu I will be posting blogs as developments happen.

What is project-red-ep91???

Welcome to my detailed 'project-red-ep91' blog.

First things first, what is the project all about?

Its a Toyota Starlet build that I have spent two years building and is approaching completion in the up and coming months ahead.

The name of the project reflects the model and colour of my starlet.

EP91 is the chassis code and red is its colour.

In all reality the project was never meant to be a project. I just needed a car to drive about, and like most people I saw many 'Glanza' running about and I loved the look of them and wanted to enquire more. Finding out that they were a 1.3 turbo excited me.

Scouring through the autotrader I saw many examples, some Glanzas, GT Turbos (older shape) and UK Starlets.

Not being able to afford turbo insurance at the time, I decided to find a low mileage UK spec starlet so that I could further improve my driving and build up some no claims before I made the jump.

As I continued progressing deeper and deeper into the project I no longer had the desire to buy a Glanza and wanted to continue my project which I had built from scratch and end up with something unique and different from the crowd regardless of engine power.

Throughout my journey thus far I have met many like-minded people and have become a big part of a decent community of fellow starlet owners thanks to the excellent enthusiast forums on the internet. My enthusiasm for the project and the scene has seen me become a big part of www.ukstarletclub.com by becoming a supermoderator, not a position for just anybody.

There is a huge following of these cars throughout the world, almost a cult car in a sense. The starlet is a lightweight hot hatch but it has so much potential when modified and set up right.

Its very much like any following really, but when you progress so far into something such as an automotive project you become part of it and you become more deeply attached.
